After exhaustive trials of six fighter jets, Indian Air Force (IAF) has made its choice clear to the Government on the kind of fighter jets needed. Frontrunners for the force are French fighter Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon built by the European consortium. Bernhard Gerwert, Chief, EADS, says "If you are taking into account the portfolio of EADS we can bring the bridge between civil aviation and military aviation." But the Americans and Russians have lost out. Boeing's F18 no longer a frontrunner and Sweden's Gripen too falling off the Indian radar.

Despite MiG 35s big thunder, its engine failing to impress while the F-16, according to the IAF has no future. Another reason favouring Rafale and Eurofighter is political. Thomas Matussek, German Ambassador, "We regard India as a strategic security partner and this is why we do not insist on an end user monitoring agreement period." So when the mother of all defence deals is signed for the 126 Multi-Role Combat Aircraft either Rafale or the Eurofighter will fly away with the Rs 42,000 crore deal.

@rostant999 i am british and i agree the raffle? is better all round but the 4.5 generation seem to have been a complete waste of money, the euro fighter did get the contract though. but we will be ahead when we bring out our ucav's

@FreddieBambino f-22 cost about 400 million a piece then add? life cycle costs and it may be 700 million per plane. it would be the biggest ripe of taxpayer money except fr the fact the f-35 is 10 times worse. every time it flies it must go through 20 to 30 hours of maintenance and it never has flown combat missions and maybe never will. it is only good patrolling us skies where no one except for a mexican drug lord may take a shot at it.

@MrSouter2 sorry old boy i hope you are not crying? like the brits are now. rafale is the better plane and developed, the eurofighter still need to add several feeatures but probably cant as budgets shrinking and britian, italy scalling back to free up money for the cash-cow f-35. BASe onlu wins contracts when they bribe someone (usually arabs)

@OlderG0ds LMAO, F-22 has dominated F-15-and F-16 in excercises. OF COURSE, it's beneficial for the US and Lockheed/Boeing to make fixed excercises like this. You had a report from your own congress saying it was crap. Even your secretary of defense said there was something? seriously wrong with America to have actually produced this crap and not intervened earlier when it was clear the jet would be useless. This he said when the US FINALLY pulled the plug in the craptor.

@OlderG0ds Not quite. It's only a $1.4b revaluation of a long term $6b contract signed years ago. I haven't? read the details but it seems that was mostly to change the data link (Halleluya! :p) which as said before isn't produced anymore. Since Obama's there the program is blocked and no other upgrade deal has been done. Wise decision IMO, LM should rather concentrate and stop screwing up JSF program, which is far more important today than any F22 upgrade :/

@OlderG0ds The units built remain in service indeed, but the program is frozen AFAIK. No future? upgrade's on the agenda for the moment, while some parts like the so-called processors aren't produced anymore and need to be changed already. The only modifications on the plane are emergency fix (which are still needed 6 years after being "operational"... meh!), like oxygen generators last May.

@yanou1789 You don't know what you are talking about yanou1789. Eurofighter is probably the best figher in the world, the F-22 doesnt even come close to any of the jets fighting for the title. The F-15 actually is probably a better jet than the F-22. And the Eurofighter is not "relying" on the Tornado, the UK has just recently had the jet into service, and ALWAYS when new jets are entering into service,? they play a secondary role in a real conflict.

The F-22 was a political project, pushed by politicians and lobbyists, not by generals for military or geostratigic means, the military has often stated that it doesnt see any "need" for the F-22, in political term that means it is useless. It has been in development for so long that it's computer system like processors are obsolete? today. And what do you think happens now, other countries will start developing radar to detect it better, so it won't even have any stealth, just useless crap.

@OlderG0ds The only reason they stay in service is because they have been bought already. The F-22 is TOTALLY useless. I would be surprised if USA didnt sell them to museums in upcoming budget cuts. They can't even communicate with other jets, they can't take small arms fire, the skin can't even tolerate? rain, the oxygen is all f**ked up and pilots passing out all the time, it needs MUCH more maintanance then other jets, It's almost an icon of US's demise in the 21st century. Scrap the F-22

This video would have been able to be objective unfortunately the Typhoon is presented as the best fighter. 10 years ago, this fighter was announced as the second best in the world. the best BVR european aircraft, the best WVR european aircraft and a very good multi-role capacities. In the libya intervention, the Typhoon depended on Tornado to release his LGB. In different exercices, he suffered severe setback particularly against Rafale in WVR. The reality is not as good as his image...?

US has abondoned the F-22 after wasting hundreds of billions of dollars in it, and by the looks of report from the US government, the F-22 is totally inefficient and useless. And now Europeans are getting suckered to buy into the JSF project, which is equally useless jet(Russian fighters beat the crap out of the JSF in an excercise just recently).
